Assignment 1b - Summary

The Lamborghini Huracán STO (Super Trofeo Omologata) is a high-performance track-oriented super sports car in the 2021 Huracán variant model that comes equipped with an advanced braking system that ensures optimal and stopping power. Its braking system uses the new Brembo carbon-ceramic material-racing (CCM-R) system that is used in the F1 racing technology to provide superior durability compared to the traditional carbon-ceramic brakes (CCB) used in other high-performance cars. The Brembo CCM-R disc provides four times the thermal conductivity and a 60% higher stress resistance. The maximum braking power gives a 25% improvement in braking force compared with traditional CCB and a 7% improvement in longitudinal deceleration. With disc dimensions of 390mm together with six-piston calipers, and 360mm together with four-piston calipers installed at the front and rear wheel respectively, it provides a remarkable braking distance of 30 meters at the speed of 100km/h to 0 km/h on track. The Huracán's braking systems also have a new front cooling duct designed to cool off the discs and calipers of the brake systems during intense track sessions and provide a consistent performance. With such braking technology in the Huracán, it truly allows drivers to experience a track-built automobile on a road that provides great comfort and confidence in knowing that the car will brake swiftly and effectively at high speed without any issues or loss in performance.

Initial Research Pathway

Sui Yuan was curious about the Lamborghini Huracan STO unique braking systems. The curiosity came about when Sui Yuan was playing the racing video game on PC and the Lamborghini automotive brand, constantly came out in the game and was widely played by multiple players.

ChatGPT was used to get an overview of the Lamborghini Huracan STO Wheel Brake System and noted down some of the specific points provided by it.

The team did a general Google search of the specific points. A few related articles came out through the search for each of the specific point.

Read the articles and used the information to synthesize for our summary.

Self-Introduction Email

Dear Professor Blackstone,

My name is Wong Sui Yuan. I am a first-year undergraduate pursuing a BEng in Mechanical Engineering (MEC) under the degree program jointly offered by the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and the University of Glasgow (UofG). I am writing this self-introduction email to introduce myself to you and to provide you with a better understanding of me and the goals I have in this module you have been teaching.

I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic in the year 2020 with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. My interest in engineering began when I enrolled in a module known as Design & Technology back in secondary school. In that class, I was taught the topic of making a simple motor-powered toy car. It was where I was exposed to a simple engineering concept of making it which brought me so much interest in how to make a better version out of it and compete with my classmates' model. This interest makes me go into a deep dive into researching and understanding how specific and unique designs and materials of car parts can potentially make it go faster than the others. That was when I decided to pursue my engineering journey and seek a lasting career related to engineering after completing my studies.

Regarding my communication strengths and weaknesses, I believe that I am good at presenting a topic that I am very familiar with to anyone but also have difficulties elaborating on it properly or professionally. To illustrate it, when I was giving a presentation about my polytechnic internship project assignment to my supervisors and lecturers, I felt confident in showcasing the work I had done. However, I often struggled with awkward presentations because of my difficulty in recalling key points and the right words. Consequently, I would resort to using Singlish language and consulting my notes to convey effective communication. What makes me unique from others is my diligence at work. I always prefer to get things done properly and thoroughly. It is so that the work process can go smoothly without encountering problems or sticky situations.

My goals for this module are to gain self-confidence and professional skills in presenting and writing formal letters as I believe that these are the important skill sets that I must have to get the dream career that I wish to pursue.

I am looking forward to learning more and improving my communication skill sets under your guidance in this module and hope to truly uphold it with confidence after the completion of this module.

Yours Sincerely,
Wong Sui Yuan

Quote Interpretation

Quote: “I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”

Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

Interpretation: In the engineering field, there are many types of specializations. Ranging from mechanical, marine, aerospace to software engineering, and etc. When it comes to explaining our specific engineering concepts, it is obvious to the general public who don't major in any engineering field to think that all specialized engineering falls into the same basic category and topic which is “Engineering”. Hence it misled them and failed to truly understand our actual range of operations. To add on, not all engineering fields are the same. Especially when it comes to Software Engineering, it doesn’t truly involve the physical and chemical concepts like metals and acids. It’s more towards mathematical science and logic. Therefore, it's far different from other kinds of common engineering.
